This poster exemplifies plakatstil, literally "poster style" in English. This design style was a very direct break from the flowery and curvilinear embellishments of the previously popular art nouveaux style. First developed by Lucien Bernhard in 1905, plakatstil is characterized by flat, blocky colors and stark, simple reduction of naturalism. In the focus on the poster's subjects against stark backgrounds, the style emulates French modernist designs which were also taking the place of art nouveaux at this time. Adler began as a sewing machine company in 1896, later expanding to bicycles, automobiles, and motorcycles. Like many German companies, their design and logos in the 1930's and 40's employed the neo-classical style preferred by Hitler and the National Socialist party. This is an example of German modernism before the Nazi subversion of artistic liberties.
