Automobiles Motobloc
1904
Lithograph in colors, condition A-, printed by Kosuth, Paris, backed on linen, framed
36 x 50 in. (91 x 127 cm.)
Motobloc was founded in 1902 as an offshoot of the Schaudel automobile and bicycle company. The Motobloc name references the company's groundbreaking technology: containing the clutch and gearbox in a single casing. Based in Bordeaux, the company found great success in France and exporting to England. While the focus of Motobloc was clearly automobiles, this poster shows there was still a large market for the sale of bicycles. At the turn of the century, bicycle and automobile manufacturers were nearly always one in the same. This poster successfully advertises both products, with pictorial emphasis on the bicycle. Naturally, such a poster would direct a buyer to their local bicycle shop, listed here on the left. While the poster is left unsigned, many experts believe it was designed by Charles Tichon. His work can also be seen in the Cyclists Attention! poster.
