Cycles Aiglon
c.1910
Lithograph in colors, condition B+, printed in France, backed on linen
45 ½ x 2 in. (114.5 x 63.5 cm.)
The Aiglon, or Eagle in English, propels the rider in effortless pedaling here. She need not even worry about controlling the bicycle, just put on a blindfold and let the eagle fly! This anonymous artist certainly borrows the motif from Pal's Falcon poster (1894), which can be seen at 1124 Regent St. It was common for printers to update older posters for reuse in such a way that an image was copied, but altered just enough as to avoid paying the original artist. Nearly always, however, these reissues would be of a poster designed by a known artist. This poster was reissued over several years, and even used on the cover of the company's 1930 catalogue. The original artist, however, remains anonymous.
