Dürkopp's Fahrräder

Lithograph in colors, condition B+, printed by J. Weiner, Vienna

36 ½ x 24 in. (92 x 61cm.)

In the midst of the 19th century industrial revolution, two German mechanics saw the demand for sewing machines imported from the U.S., and began producing machines of their own in Bielefeld, Germany. In 1867, the company joined with recently formed Dürkopp-Schmidt sewing machines, and expanded into bicycle manufacturing by the 1890's. Through the early 20th century, Dürkopp manufactured a huge variety of products, but like most German companies, suffered great economic downturn between the world wars. Dürkopp is still in business today and sticking to their roots as a high-tech sewing machine company active in Bielefeld Germany and Graz, Austria. This poster commemorates their early foray into the bicycle market.
