The Bedford Vehicle Company was a subsidiary of Vauxhall Motors, itself the British subsidiary of GM. Bedford was founded in 1930. Before that point, GM produced cars and trucks in Canada in order to import them to Britain under "imperial preference". The acquisition of Vauxhall allowed GM to manufacture in England. They began production in the town of Luton, which is located in Bedfordshire, the namesake of the newly founded division. Bedfords were exported across the world, and primarily to British Commonwealth countries. The United Africa Company imported British goods to the continent, and provided Bedford trucks for industry and commercial use in South Africa and other African commonwealth countries. Bedford Vehicles was one of GMs most successful endeavors, as it allowed them to export their products to a huge number of international markets.
